specified shipping dates...Industry wide: about 30-35 million trees are harvested for sale at retail lots.
Q: Do all species keep equally well after harvest?
A: Some of the best trees are the North Carolina Fraser fir, Balsam fir, Scotch pine and Douglas-fir. Regardless of species, consumers must make the final judgment of quality by looking at, touching, feeling, smelling and shaking the tree.
Q: How much of the trunk should be cut off before setting up the tree?
A: Removing a thin disk (1/4 to 1/2 inch) off the trunk before placing the tree in a water holding stand is all that is needed.
Q: What is the minimum amount of water a tree stand should hold?
A: As a general rule, a tree can use up to a quart of water per day for each inch of stem diameter. The warmer the temperature and the lower the relative humidity where the tree is displayed, the greater the amount of water required by the tree.
Q: How long does it take for real tree to grow?
A: It takes 8 to 10 years for a tree to grow to 6-8 feet...about 350 million Christmas Trees are growing in fields now.
Q: When is a good time to choose a tree?
A: Thanksgiving to Christmas...about 7-9 million families go to a Christmas Tree Farm. When selecting a tree, do a freshness test on the tree. Green needles on fresh trees break crisply when bent sharply with the fingers -- much like a fresh carrot.
Q: Are Real Christmas Trees Recyclable?
A: Yes. Real Trees are a renewable, recyclable resource. Artificial trees contain non-biodegradable plastics and possible metal toxins such as lead. There are more than 4,000 local Christmas Tree recycling programs throughout the United States.
Q: Are there any other ways I can recycle my Real Tree after Christmas?
A: Yes. It can be decorated with organic ornaments and put outside in your backyard. The wildlife in your area will have a feast throughout the winter months. Here are some recipes for organic ornaments.
Popcorn Clusters:
Ingredients - Bags of Popcorn, Pipe Cleaners,
Popcorn Popper Directions -
Sew popcorn onto pipe cleaners and shape into individual shapes or cluster balls. Can add fresh cranberries or raisins.
Grape Wreaths:
Ingredients - Grapes, Pipe Cleaners Directions -
Directions - Pierce grapes with pipe cleaner. Cover pipe cleaner with grapes, leaving an inch on both sides. Twist ends of pipe cleaner together to form a circle. Hang on tree.
Q: Why choose a real tree over an artificial?
A: For every Real Christmas Tree harvested, 1 to 3 seedlings are planted the following spring.
The average family uses an artificial tree for only six to nine years before throwing it away, where it will remain in a landfill for centuries after disposal.
